I felt like I was experiencing an episode of Dynasty at times. ![]() With Cricket’s and Hunter’s wedding around the corner, there’s even more family drama that gets thrown in. Family secrets are beginning to unravel and if you think you know what’s coming, you couldn’t be more wrong. ![]() ![]() My professor was trying to be modern and avant-garde but the book was incomprehensible and had no plot, just intricate emotionally-laden descriptions that initially intrigued and later bored me. I found it unreadable – one of very few required novels I didn’t read cover to cover. I’d seen this book recommended so many times, but was avoiding it because I was required to read one of Erdrich’s books in college and did not like it. To think I didn’t really want to read it that much! The best historical fiction I’ve read in a long time, I might even like it better than Abby Takes a Stand. ![]() From the suspenseful prologue to the last word, I was fully immersed in this book. This is one year in the life of seven-year-old Omakayas (Oh-MAH-kay-ahs), an Ojibwa (Anishinabe) girl, in 1847. While the main character is seven, I would recommend this book for older children. Messy and often heartbreaking, Maria's journey is one well worth taking. In Meagan Brotherss Supergirl Mixtapes, a music-obsessed girl travels to New York City to find herself. Maria is a sympathetically flawed character, and the climactic scene with her mother is painfully real. The 1990s New York City setting is captivating in its detail, and Maria's struggles to bond with her mother, survive a snobby school, and understand her mutual attraction with Travis are honestly portrayed. Brothers's (Debbie Harry Sings in French) story is steeped in rock and roll history and lore, from the "supergirl mixtapes" that Maria's friend Dory sends her (so named because they mostly feature girl bands) to her mother's obsession with Patti Smith.
